Character for Learning Guidance


Autumn term 2019

We will be focusing on resilience for the remainder of this term as we feel it is important that students know that ‘sticking with it’ and ‘facing challenges head on’ is the way to improve. As part of this drive we have also aligned the Attitude to Learning guidance to Character for Learning. It explains the expectations linked to our core values.

1 = Exemplary


Engages with all in a polite and compassionate way understanding others’ needs and feelings.

Is resilient in their work ethic and every day approach. Never gives up when things get tough, trying new ways to learn, research or present knowledge.

Is ambitious in all that they do. Proactive and engaged in progressing their learning and has a determination to succeed.

Is ambitious in their learning by acting on feedback and understands their part in any situation. Can control their emotions, behaviour and thoughts with a positive outcome.

2 = Excellent


Frequently engages in a polite and compassionate way understanding others’ needs and feelings.

Is frequently resilient in their work ethic and every day approach. Generally, never gives up when things get tough, trying new ways to learn, research or present knowledge.

Is frequently ambitious in all that they do. Proactive and engaged in progressing their learning and has a determination to succeed.

Frequently is ambitious by acting on feedback and understands their part in any situation. Can control their emotions, behaviour and thoughts with a positive outcome.

3 = Progressing


Sometimes engages in a polite
and compassionate way understanding others’ needs and feelings.

Can be resilient in their work ethic and every day approach but often gives up when things get tough. Sometimes trying new ways to learn, research or present knowledge.

Is ambitious in some areas but not all subject areas. Can be proactive and engaged in progressing their learning and have a determination to succeed, but only when things are going well.

Is often distracted and forgets to be ambitious. Does not act on all the feedback and understand their part in any situation. Can be overwhelmed by their emotions, behaviour and thoughts resulting in a negative outcome at times.

4 = Insufficient


Rarely engages in a polite and compassionate way understanding others’ needs and feelings.

Can occasionally be resilient in their work ethic and every day approach but regularly gives up when things get tough. Occasionally trying new ways to learn, research or present knowledge.

Is rarely ambitious in their learning. Is rarely proactive and engaged in progressing their learning and rarely has a determination to succeed.

Rarely is ambitious in their learning. Does not act on all the feedback and understand their part in any situation. Can often be overwhelmed by their emotions, behaviour and thoughts resulting in negative outcomes and behaviours.
