Carnegie Medal Reading

Carnegie medal reading club trip

On Tuesday 18thJune I took my Reading Club students (Sulat, Keilan, Ashley, Elektra, Angelina, Evalign, and Kelis) to Townley Grammar School theatre in order to participate in the annual Bexley Carnegie Medal event. Each school that had been shadowing the National Award had to present their favourite book from the shortlist of eight.

Our students performed brilliantly, making full use of the stage area, speaking confidently, clearly and with expression. They chose  “The House with Chicken Legs” as their favourite title, which is based on the Russian folk tales of Baba Yaga. Their performance of dramatized scenes from the book elicited positive comments from teaching staff of other schools - they were fantastic ambassadors for King Henry School.

We all really enjoyed the afternoon; I was very proud of the whole group. (The overall national judges’ winner for the CILIP Carnegie Medal was The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo).
